Hot water is essential all year, but is even more important during winter. Water heaters that are properly installed can last up to 10 years before needing replacement. Poor usage and neglect can reduce the life expectancy.

We will be sharing some water heater tips in this article to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Try to Lower the Thermostat

Most water heaters are set to 140 degrees by default. Property owners don’t adjust this setting. 140 degrees is extremely hot. You will be scalded if you take a hot shower.

Washing machines can only use 130 degrees for hot water settings. To save energy and prevent mineral build-up and corrosion in your pipes and water heater, you can lower the thermostat to 130 or 120 degrees.

Attempt to Use Cold Water

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 18% of household energy bills are attributed to water heaters. This is partly because most people take hot water as a given. You can use cold water to do many of the same things as hot water.

Cold water or warm water can be used for washing laundry loads to save energy and protect clothes from shrinking, color fade, and breaking down. Cold water can be used for basic grooming such as washing your hands and brushing your teeth. In addition, cold showers can also have many health benefits that you might want to take into consideration.

Insulate the Water Tank

Insulate your water tank, and the first few feet of hot and cold water pipes that are connected to it, to prevent heat loss. To help avoid causing damage to the unit or increasing fire danger, be sure to follow all manufacturer’s instructions.

Regularly Drain the Hot Water Tank

A water tank can become clogged with naturally occurring minerals and other debris. The buildup of minerals can block heat transfer, reducing the efficiency of your water heater.

This can cause water to become discolored or sour. To remove this buildup, drain your hot water tank at least once a year. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and contact a licensed Long Beach Plumber if you have any questions.

Old Appliances

Older water heaters are more susceptible to bursting or breaking down. While routine maintenance and timely repair can be helpful, if your heater is more than 10 years old it may be time to replace it.

Upgrade your old water heater to take advantage of the latest features and improve energy efficiency. .
